How to make your Christmas tree look fuller

Published: 15/10/2025

As we put up the Christmas tree ready for decorating, you may be worrying about the dreaded empty space! Whether you’ve got a natural tree where nature hasn’t cooperated with aesthetics, or an artificial tree with more gaps than you expected, we’ve got all the tips you need to make your Christmas tree look fuller.

Fluff your tree

If your tree has been stored or transported (or perhaps you’ve purchased a brand new artificial Christmas tree), it will need some attention to make it look fuller. Taking the time to unflatten branches, to change the directions they spread out in, and generally making the tree bigger might be time-consuming, but absolutely worth it.

We recommend wearing gloves while you do this, which will make it easier to make sweeping changes, prevent injury, and make the process quicker. You’re one step closer to the fullest Christmas tree you’ve ever seen…

Use Garlands to add more foliage

An incredibly simple trick that can totally transform your tree into looking much fuller, is adding in your festive garlands. Where once we might have used tinsel, drape your garland around your tree in areas that could use additional foliage, and step back and admire how fantastic your tree now looks.

Use Fillers In Empty Space

We have some perfect options for filling empty space in your tree, including some beautiful Berry Sprays and Fluffy Pom Pom Sprays. These add a different texture to traditional ornaments, whilst also being easier to maneuver into the space you need them to.

Use high-shine Baubles to create reflections

If you’re trying to make your tree seem fuller, one of the simplest and easiest ways to do so is by using high-shine baubles. These, as well as mirror-like surfaces, not only reflect the light to make it more eye-catching, but also the pattern and texture of the Christmas tree itself. This tricks the eye into thinking it’s a more layered tree than it is, making it look fuller.

Mix up your bauble sizes

Using different bauble sizes is a fantastic way to add texture to your tree, but it’s also a great way of filling empty spaces to make your tree look fuller. With some careful placement, you can use your smaller baubles in the more full areas, and the larger ones in the emptier spaces. Not only does it make your tree feel balanced, but no one would think to check your large baubles for a potentially empty space behind it, and all the while you’ve got a beautiful, Instagram-worthy tree.

Consider the base of your tree

Many people will decorate their Christmas tree beautifully, but perhaps neglect the base of it. Whether you add in a luxurious tree skirt or obscure the base with presents, remember that when you’re in the decorating stage, this is another area of empty space. Leaving this uncovered can make the tree feel unfinished, and as a result, more empty than it actually is. Experiment with different options here – from standing decorations to even florals – and your tree is guaranteed to look fantastic.
