How to Create a Statement Hydrangea Arrangement

Published: 18/05/2026

If you’re looking for a statement faux flower arrangement, hydrangeas make the perfect flower to do it with. With generous blooms, natural volume, and a range of colours, they create impact without excessive additional styling. Artificial hydrangeas make this even easier to achieve, with long lasting beauty and minimal maintenance.

Why Hydrangeas Make the Perfect Statement Flower

Effortlessly elegant, completely eye-catching, and surprisingly easy to style, Hydrangeas are a go-to flower when it comes to crafting a statement arrangement. Whether you’re looking to fill a dining table, hallway, console table or something else entirely, a hydrangea bouquet or arrangement leads with its own style.

Their generous blooms give instant volume, meaning fewer stems of flower or foliage for an impactful arrangement. They work beautifully in both modern and traditional settings, with a timeless appeal.

With artificial hydrangeas, these benefits go even further. Each bloom will keep colour, shape, and positioning without wilting or shedding. They’re also easy to style into position – and to leave in place with minimal maintenance, looking perfect day after day.

How To Create Your Hydrangea Arrangement

Step One: Choose your Colour Palette

Hydrangeas have a wide range of colour options, and you can select yours based on the style of your home. We recommend exploring only one or two tones for maximum impact.

For classic elegance, the white hydrangeas are widely loved. Blue evokes a traditional styling, the colour many people associate with hydrangeas. However, you can easily match your space – we have a full range of colours, pinks, purples, even tints of green so that you can build exactly what you envisage.

Step Two: Select the Right Vase

Understanding the size and style of your vase allows you to pick and arrange the right blooms to fill it. Consider whether you want to fill a large space with a full statement vase, and opt for larger, urn-style vases for maximum impact. Perhaps you want to draw attention to a smaller area, using a smaller vase but allowing hydrangeas to draw the focus – like a console table, or bookcase.

Take note of the size of the neck from your selection, as this will dictate how many hydrangea stems you will need to add for it to look its best. We recommend odd numbers of stems, for a more natural look.

For example, in styling just our Faux Hydrangeas in our Eva Glazed Pottery Vase Slim 34cm, we use 9 stems.

Step Three: Arrange for Maximum Volume

Styling Just Hydrangeas?

There are no straight lines in nature, and ensuring that your hydrangea arrangements aren’t too uniform will elevate their appearance significantly. For a bold statement, we love keeping the arrangement to just hydrangeas, but you can easily mix it up depending on your preference.

Top practical tips for styling hydrangeas:
  • Cross the stems within the vase when you place them: This prevents them from all standing at the same angle.
  • Vary heights: Do this with artificial flowers by bending the base of the stems to the preferred height, or by angling the stems differently. You can also bend the blooms in certain directions, which will make it easier.
  • Don’t overcrowd: It can be tempting to fill the vase with as many stems as will fit for a full look, but tightly packed blooms look both unnatural and compressed. Allow space to let the hydrangeas reach their full potential.

    Styling Hydrangeas with Foliage?

    • Choose your foliage carefully: Hydrangeas are versatile stems, but an easy way to find the right foliage is to look at their leaves or their colours. We find eucalyptus to be a friend to hydrangea styling, but you might find you can introduce more colours as a result.
    • Place your foliage first: Fill in your canvas of foliage first and then add in your hydrangeas. This prevents you from moving the perfectly placed florals while you add in your foliage.
    • Let both stems breathe: Give enough space in the arrangement for the hydrangeas and the foliage to assume natural positions. If your foliage is tall, let it represent the height. If it drops, ensure you’ve given it enough space to do so.

    Styling Ideas by Room

    Dining Table

Statement arrangements on the dining table should look full and eye-catching but should be cautious of the eyeline of diners so that conversation isn’t interrupted. Use shorter, wider vases, which allow the blooms to take up space, but at a lower level.

Our own Faux Rose & Hydrangea in Curve vase is an example of letting the flowers make the statement, rather than the height of the arrangement.

    Hallway Console

Style your hallway with a tall and dramatic arrangement, as your space allows. Use a larger vase to fill with additional stems for a piece that will transform a functional space into a statement one.

You can see this in action with our Luxury White Hydrangea and Eucalyptus Bouquet, which we’ve styled again with the Eva Glazed Pottery Vase Wide 31cm. It’s tall, wide, and impossible to ignore.

    Coffee Table

Consider a wide, rounded cluster of hydrangeas for your statement arrangement on a coffee table, as it will be one viewed from all angles. This is best served by hydrangea-only collections, where you can combine stems of a single colour.

Our own Faux Hydrangea and Peony in vase is a perfect example for standard coffee tables, but for lower coffee tables, consider additional height.

Why Are Artificial Hydrangeas Best in Large Arrangements?

Hydrangeas are one of our most popular flowers, and for good reason – they’ve got fantastic benefits that can’t be ignored.

    • Easy Styling: Hydrangeas are loved for their full, rounded heads, which naturally create volume within an arrangement. This makes them one of the easiest flowers to style for impact.
    • No Drooping: Once styled, faux hydrangeas stay exactly as you left them. No need to discard wilted blooms — just effortless enjoyment from here on.
    • Reusable: Hydrangeas fit into all kinds of décor, meaning if you want to refresh your space later and opt for a different arrangement style, artificial hydrangeas allow you to do so at any time of year without waste.
    • Allergy and Pet-Friendly: No need to worry about fresh plant toxicity or pollen allergies with faux flowers, making them one of the friendliest choices for households and guests alike.
    • Realistic: We choose our range of hydrangeas based on nearly 50 years in the faux flower industry, making us experts in what makes an artificial flower indistinguishable from the real thing.
